Big Sur, California - February 2021
There are few coastlines in America as iconic as the Big Sur coast in California. With a recent landslide blocking access to this area from the south, we took advantage of light traffic and enjoyed a midweek visit seeing very few people. This was just the medicine I needed and if my creative fire wasn’t already stoked from the days spent shooting in Yosemite, this area was sure to deliver some magic!
It didn’t take long because this coast line is absolutely stunning as you drive south from Carmel on Highway 1 with massive wave crashing over jagged outcrops of granite in Garrapata State Park. The most brilliant sky I have shot in months brought this very scene alive in the first image of the Big Sur Collection.
Exploring deeper brought us to a tiny enchanted v alley with a gurgling stream winding through fields of Calla Lilies to a secluded beach on the Pacific. This was extra special because Dawn’s favorite flower happens to be the Calla Lily! We felt incredibly lucky to find such a beautiful sight!
The final image of the collection was captured at Pheifer Beach in Big Sur proper. Massive conglomerate sandstone sea stacks tower over this beach protecting some areas from the rough and relentless surf. Over eons the surf has pounded its way through these rocky sea stacks and created numerous sea arches where the water flows through. In winter the setting sun can cast rays of light for a brief moment before setting into the sea. On this evening we had near perfect conditions with beautiful clear skies for sunset and the result was pure magic!
