Aspen Trees: Enchanting Fine Art Photography for Sale

With their tall white slender trunks, aspen trees make for a favorite focal point of my photography in any season. In the autumn, their quaking leaves turn a brilliant golden yellow to red, creating breathtaking landscapes. Aspen trees smooth bark and straight trunks blanketed against fresh white sparkling snow create mesmerizing winter scenery. As fresh green spring buds turn into summer, a whole new experience emerges before the lens, making aspen trees a favorite subject year round!

Aspen trees have a unique growth pattern and are considered one of the largest living organisms on the planet. Aspen Skyward

400 Limited Edition / 20 Artist Proof

Sacred geometry and symmetry in nature are compositional elements that have influenced my vision since my earliest days. This was one of my first memorable compositions shot on large format in the forest near our mountain cabin in Ophir, Colorado. If I close my eyes while holding this vision, I can still hear the fluttering leaves in the fall breeze.

Aspen & Fern

400 Limited Edition / 20 Artist Proof

Perfect conditions lined up on this particular autumn in Colorado. I had only dreamed of a shot like this until touring along some of the small dirt roads near Crested Butte, Colorado. The area has some of the largest and healthiest stands of Aspen anywhere and is a favorite location of mine in the fall. The understory in this particular grove will always stand out in my memory and remains a favorite in my collection.

Winter Lines

250 Limited Edition / 13 Artist Proof

Winter brings clean and uncomplicated compositions into focus. The white bark of this aspen grove in southern Colorado casts graphic shadows across the blank white canvas of snow.

Frosted Aspen

250 Limited Edition / 13 Artist Proof

Venturing into a winter gale with my large format view camera I was drawn to the sense of isolation and peace the obscured scenery provided. Nearby, Dawn and our two children made hot cocoa and played a game of UNO in our VW camper van. Even our Labrador opted for the warm camper! Getting the shot, especially with my choice of camera format, took a considerable amount of time and I was coated with snow very similarly to the aspen trees that I was shooting.

Owl Creek Aspen

250 Limited Edition / 13 Artist Proof

Shooting the aspen groves of Colorado has kept me intrigued for many seasons. I am always looking for new ways to see the forest. This image just captured the depth of the forest so nicely. Shot on film, I appreciate the subtle details that draw the viewer deep into the scene.

Snow Kissed

100 Limited Edition / 5 Artist Proof

This morning brought an unexpected transformation to the landscape. The leaves of autumn had just dropped and the scenery was reduced to browns and muted colors. With the arrival of snow I decided to head out onto a favorite local hike in the Vail area to visit some of my favorite aspen trees. Light can be elusive and this day brought such a unique quality it would seem impossible to replicate. Every branch, leaf and needle seemed to have been kissed by the snow.

Piney Aspen

100 Limited Edition / 5 Artist Proof

Contrast is a fundamental element in photography and examples in nature abound. While heading out of Vail on a very bumpy forest road leading into the Gore Range, I had plenty of time to admire my surroundings at the crawling speeds the road demanded. This was a particularly colorful year in Colorado and the tress seemed to glow from within on this particular evening. Once I framed this scene and viewed it through the camera I was immediately hooked, this was the shot I needed to capture!
